New Delhi, April 17, 2025 — In a move that has caught many auto enthusiasts and eco-conscious buyers off guard, Maruti Suzuki has reportedly discontinued the CNG variant of its Grand Vitara compact SUV. While no formal announcement has been made, the removal of the CNG model from the official NEXA website has fueled strong speculation that the automaker is phasing it out in favor of upcoming electric options.
This decision comes despite growing popularity of CNG vehicles in India, known for their affordability and high mileage. Maruti Suzuki has traditionally led the CNG segment, but the Grand Vitara CNG now seems to be an exception to the rule.
Why Is the Grand Vitara CNG Being Phased Out?The CNG variant of the Grand Vitara, launched as the first factory-fitted CNG SUV in the compact segment, initially gained attention but never quite matched the popularity of its petrol-hybrid counterparts. Industry sources suggest underwhelming sales figures and performance limitations as key factors behind the decision.
Fitted with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, the SUV produced 102 Bhp on petrol but dropped to 87 Bhp on CNG, with torque reducing from 137 Nm to 121.5 Nm. While suitable for urban commutes, users reported a lack of highway performance, which may have turned buyers away.
Fleet Segment Preference and Market DynamicsCNG vehicles are typically in high demand within the fleet segment—notably for taxis and rideshare services. Maruti’s models like Dzire, WagonR, and Swift dominate this space, thanks to their affordability and efficiency. The Grand Vitara, positioned as a more premium SUV, did not appeal to this market. The absence of a “Tour” version—often favored by fleet operators—further limited its reach.
Analysts believe that the higher cost, lower demand, and performance trade-offs made it difficult for the Grand Vitara CNG to secure a foothold in either the personal or commercial vehicle segments.
Maruti Suzuki Shifts Focus to e-VitaraMaruti appears to be pivoting toward electric mobility, with its upcoming e-Vitara, the brand’s first battery-electric SUV, slated for launch in May 2025. First revealed at Auto Expo 2025, the e-Vitara will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant and exported globally.
While full specifications are still under wraps, Maruti has confirmed that the e-Vitara will feature competitive range, refined performance, and a modern EV platform. The company is positioning it as a serious contender in the growing Indian EV market, potentially replacing the role the CNG model was expected to fill.
