A Ukrainian lawmaker and former speaker of parliament was shot dead on Saturday in the western city of Lviv, authorities confirmed -- a killing, President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced as a "horrific murder."
Police said the victim was gunned down in a hail of bullets but did not initially name him.
Zelensky later identified the slain politician as Andriy Parubiy , who served as parliamentary speaker in the 2010s, and promised a full investigation.
On X, the Ukrainian president wrote: "Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko have just reported the first known circumstances of the horrendous murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy was killed. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
"All necessary forces and means are engaged in the investigation and search for the killer," Zelenskyy added.
