McDonald’s has taken swift action in response to an E coli outbreak affecting several states, with the company now investigating the possible role of certain food ingredients , reported NBC New York.

While the source of the contamination has not been definitively identified, investigators are focusing on fresh-cut onions and beef patties as potential culprits. According to a statement from McDonald’s, a subset of the illnesses may be linked to slivered onions sourced by a supplier serving three distribution centres.

In a statement, McDonald's North America chief supply chain officer Cesar Piña emphasised the company's commitment to food safety .

"Serving customers safely in every single restaurant, each and every day, is our top priority and something we’ll never compromise on," Piña said. He added that the company is taking "swift and decisive action" following the outbreak.

McDonald’s has instructed all impacted restaurants to immediately remove slivered onions from their supply and has paused distribution of the product in the affected regions. Out of caution, the fast-food giant has also temporarily removed the Quarter Pounder from restaurants in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

"Impacted restaurants are receiving a stock recovery notice today," McDonald’s stated, urging locations to reach out to supply chain managers with any questions. While the Quarter Pounder is unavailable in the affected areas, McDonald’s reassured customers that other menu items, including popular beef products such as the Cheeseburger, Big Mac, and McDouble, remain unaffected and available.

The company said that it is working closely with its suppliers to replenish stock and hopes to restore the Quarter Pounder in the coming weeks, though timelines will vary by market. McDonald’s also reiterated its cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) and pledged to provide timely updates as the situation evolves.

In a video message, Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s US, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to food safety, stating, "Food safety is so important to me and everyone at McDonald's."
