Shiv Sena (UBT) names 14 of its 15 MLAs on 1st list of 65, fields nephew of CM Eknath Shinde's mentor against him

MUMBAI: After hectic negotiations with Congress and NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT) Wednesday evening announced its first list of 65 candidates for the assembly elections. It has renominated 14 of its 15 sitting MLAs and declared nominees for 13 seats in Mumbai, including Aaditya Thackeray from Worli and Aaditya's cousin Varun Sardesai from Bandra East.

While naming candidates for 12 seats in the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the party has fielded Kedar Dighe, nephew of the late Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe, from Kopri-Pachpakhadi against CM Eknath Shinde who speaks of Anand Dighe as his mentor.

The only sitting MLA not included in the first list is Ajay Chaudhuri from Sewri.

While Varun Sardesai has been named from Bandra East though that is one of the seats on which there is a dispute with Congress, Sena (UBT has not named candidates from other disputed seats in the city like Versova, Colaba, Byculla, Ghatkopar West and Chandivli. Some of these seats are likely to be given to Congress and NCP (SP).

While announcing its first list for the assembly elections, Shiv Sena (UBT) party has named candidates for certain seats on which there has been a dispute like Ramtek, where it has fielded Vishal Barbate, Nandgaon from where Ganesh Dhatrak will contest, Solapur South which Amar Patil will fight and Karjat where Nitin Sawant’s name has been declared. The Sena (UBT) has named 7 candidates from Marathwada. No Muslim candidate appears on its first list.

In Mumbai, the party has fielded Sameer Desai from Goregaon and Anant Nar from Jogeshwari East. Party functionary Amol Kirtikar, who lost the Lok Sabha polls from Mumbai North West, has not been given an assembly ticket though he was said to be in the reckoning from Goregaon and Jogeshwari East.

In Nashik West, Sudhakar Badgujar, a close aide of Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, has been given the ticket. On several seats where the sitting MLAs moved away and joined the Shiv Sena led by CM Shinde, the Sena (UBT) has given a chance to fresh faces. Thus in Kurla it is Pravina Morajkar who is the candidate, in Magathane it is Udesh Patekar, in Palghar it is Jayendra Dubala and in Ambernath it is Rajesh Wankhede, among others.

Former MP Rajan Vichare, who lost the Thane Lok Sabha seat, has been fielded against BJP’s Sanjay Kelkar from Thane assembly constituency. While UBT Sena has rewarded loyalists in seats where it had candidates, newly-joined functionaries like Unmesh Patil from Chalisgaon, Advay Hire from Malegaon Outer, Siddharth Kharat from Mehkar, Dipesh Mhatre from Dombivli, Suresh Bankar from Sillod, Deepak Salunkhe from Sangola and Rajan Teli from Sawantwadi, among others, have also got tickets. In Dapoli, the party has named Sanjay Kadam, who switched from the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

Sitting MLA Shankarrao Gadakh of the Krantikari Shetkari Party has been given a Sena (UBT) ticket from Nevasa. After the split in the Sena in 2022, he had backed the Sena (UBT). Against Sena minister Tanaji Sawant in the Paranda assembly constituency, the Sena (UBT) has given the ticket to Rahul Patil, son of former MLA Dyaneshwar Patil. The party has fielded MK Madhvi from Airoli against BJP minister Ganesh Naik.
