The NFL's 2024 success in kickers has sparked speculation about the possibility of narrowing the goal posts in the future

The NFL is considering narrowing the uprights due to an increase in kicker accuracy, particularly from long distances. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that there is "chatter" about altering the goal posts, but she doesn't expect any changes this season or next. However, if kickers continue to perform well, a change could be on the horizon. This season, kickers have made 77 field goals from 50 yards or longer, making them the most in NFL history through six weeks.

NFL is considering narrowing the uprights due to an increase in kicker accuracyAccording to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, NFL kickers' success in 2024 has led to speculation that the league may consider narrowing the goal posts in the future. While this change is unlikely this season or next, it could be considered if kicking numbers remain high. NFL executive Jeff Milner has indicated that the Competition Committee could consider such a proposal at the end of the season. Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey , a former soccer player and USFL kicker, has been a cheat code for head coach Mike McCarthy. Aubrey has made 17-for-19 field goal attempts this season, including eight from 50 yards or more, making 36 of his 38 attempts last season.

An anonymous NFL head coach was vehemently against any changes to the uprights, despite kicking seemingly getting easier in the NFL as the kickers continue to improve, telling Russini, "It doesn't make sense to penalize the improved accuracy of these kickers. This reminds me of the U.S. Open when they bring the fairways in to make them harder to hit; they want to make this the hardest tournament of the year. For the golfers, they can adjust their equipment. The kickers? Well, they just have a foot. We need to embrace the outstanding performances, not penalize them for their improvements.”

The NFL may increase the difficulty on kickers in the future if the goal posts are narrowed. In 2015, the extra point spot was moved back to the 15-yard line, making extra points less automatic. Despite the challenge for kickers, 21 of the 32 teams have not missed an extra point this season. A drastic change of 18.5-foot distance between uprights could alter coaches' decisions on whether to kick or go for it on fourth down.
