Chennai: A decade ago, Ruban Kumar dreamt of competing in the Sudirman Cup . Little did he know that he would be standing on that very stage years later, turning his dream into reality. More than merely participating, the men’s doubles duo of Ruban and Hariharan Amsakarunan will now shoulder additional responsibility, as Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were ruled out due to illness on Monday.
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) did not announce any replacement for Satwik and Chirag, so Ruban and Hariharan will be the only men’s doubles duo representing India in the mixed team event. “This is a good opportunity for us. We do not have any pressure and have to just play the way we have been playing.

Initially, we were supposed to play the first few matches and thought that Satwik and Chirag would then take over later. So, we were prepared to play in any circumstance,” Hariharan told TOI. Ruban and Hariharan predominantly focussed on singles during their junior days.
They would often face each other in singles matches at state and district-level meets before joining forces. While many players tend to part ways after a brief stint, the Tamil Nadu players have continued to stick together, and their hard work is paying off.
“We have always kept things simple and never complicated them. After we win or lose, we do not discuss the match and simply move on,” the 21-year-old Ruban said.
