Stefon Diggs makes unexpected decision after Patriots consider cutting him over viral boat video

Send Push

New England Patriots fans were left surprised this week after wide receiver Stefon Diggs showed up at team practice. This comes just days after a video of Diggs partying on a boat spread across the internet. Many people questioned his commitment. Some reports even suggested the Patriots were unsure about keeping him.

Stefon Diggs faces backlash after skipping OTAs for boat party
The Patriots conducted an offseason team exercise (OTA) at their Foxborough, Massachusetts, training facility on Monday, May 27. Stefon Diggs, newly signed with the team during the offseason, attended the meeting. Diggs started practice for the first time after a video of him appeared online.

In the video, posted last week, Diggs was seen dancing on a boat. He appeared to be with a group of people and was holding what some online users believed to be a suspicious item. The video quickly went viral. Many fans were upset because Diggs had not attended earlier OTAs with the Patriots.

While these activities are not mandatory, many expect new players especially big signings to show up and build chemistry. Some sources, including The Sporting News and NBC Sports Boston, said the Patriots even discussed possibly cutting him. The reason was not just the missed workouts, but the negative attention the video brought.

Stefon Diggs tries to regain trust with quick return to training
Diggs’ return on May 27 was seen as a move to quiet criticism. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels spoke to the media after practice. He said Diggs is staying on track with the team’s plan.

“I know he’s staying up on the information and material,” McDaniels told reporters during the press session, as reported by Boston.com. “He’s learning the playbook and working to be ready.”

The Patriots signed Diggs to boost their offense. Last season, no wide receiver on the team had more than 700 receiving yards. The Patriots also drafted rookie quarterback Drake Maye , who needs strong receivers around him. Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowl player, was expected to play a key role.

However, the 31-year-old is also coming off a torn ACL. Coaches and fans alike want to see him fully focused. The viral video sparked concern, but his appearance at the most recent OTA may help repair his image.

For now, the team is watching closely to see how committed Diggs really is.
