Ranji Trophy: Captain Govinda Poddar keeps Odisha in hunt against Jammu and Kashmir

Send Push
Even as rains tried playing the role of a spoilsport once again, Govinda Poddar led from the front in pursuit of Odisha 's first-innings lead and kept hopes alive for the same at the end of Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Jammu & Kashmir .

With just 60 overs of the designated 90 bowled at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Saturday, hosts Odisha were 198 for the loss of five wickets and 72 runs away from J&K's first-innings total of 270. And skipper Poddar, batting on 87, will be eager to make the most of Day 3 to bag the three points in the innings and make up for the washout of their opening game against Tripura.

The J&K bowling attack, on the other hand, will aim to send the skipper home as early as possible and repeat their first innings feat that earned them the three point in their drawn opener.

On Saturday, it was spinner Abid Mushtaq , who was the pick of the J&K bowlers claiming the scalps of veteran Biplab Samantray and Kartik Biswal before they could forge a partnership with Poddar.

Earlier, after a delayed resumption of Day 2's play on 15/1, Odisha were able to make a steady progress in their innings with Anurag Sarangi (35) and Sandeep Pattnaik (26) starting to take control of the game. However, their 51-run partnership was broken when medium pacer Sahil Lotra had Pattnaik caught at the hands of Umar Nazir.

Sarangi, too, could not keep his skipper company and lost his wicket with a catch to Mushtaq off a delivery from medium pacer Nazir.

Thereafter, it was the Odisha skipper all the way as he held his fort and kept the scoreboard in motion. His balanced knock off 148 balls on the day included eight boundaries and two that went over. While it kept Odisha's hopes bright amid the gloom in the sky, Poddar's resolute innings earned him his 20th first-class half-century.

With rain threat looming over a number of Ranji Trophy games this round, Odisha will hope to avoid the fate of their last game and come back on the penultimate day looking to make it count while the Paras Dogra-led visitors stand in their way.

Brief scores: Jammu & Kashmir 270. Odisha 198/5 in 69.1 overs (A Sarangi 35, S Pattnaik 26, G Poddar 87 batting; Mushtaq 2-52). Match to continue.
