CHENNAI: It has been a season to remember for Indonesia’s Janice Tjen. The 23-year-old, who started the year ranked outside the top-400 (412), capped the season by clinching the WTA 250 Chennai Open title, a victory that will propel her into the top-70s.

Fourth-seeded Tjen got the better of seventh seed Kimberly Birrell of Australia 6-4, 6-3 at the SDAT Stadium here on Sunday.
Both players had limited recovery time going into the final, with the Australian coming off a marathon three-hour long singles semifinal and Tjen having competed in two last-four clashes — including doubles.
After 23 years, Tjen became the first player from her country to secure a WTA Tour title. The last to win was Angelique Widjaja in 2002.
