Is Kanu Behl's film Despatch, starring Manoj Bajpayee, based on slain journalist J Dey's life?

Jyotirmoy Dey, also known as J Dey, was a senior journalist, who was shot dead in 2011. Over the years, much has been written about the incident, and the webseries Scoop too weaves around his murder, and is based on the life of former journalist Jigna Vora, who was accused (and later acquitted) of the crime.

Now, a new movie, called Despatch is said to be based on the murder of J Dey. However, director Kanu Behl told us, "It is not just J Dey. It started off with many other things that we have been observing in the country, and has been happening way before this incident. There is a certain trajectory of freedom of expression and things that are happening all around us, which we observe from way before that. So I think it was coming together in many of those kinds of cases. ''

He added, "When Ishani (co-writer) and I would discuss this, what we found banal was that most of these journalistic stories are about these hero characters and are very altruistically in search of a story, and they want to break the story and benefit the whole world. And we used to discuss that "sare journalists aise kyon hote hain". They are also human beings and why are journalists shown as God like people?

He added, "Our interest was primarily in having an internal and external world for the film, and the internal world of a journalist who has his own needs, and with a gaze of whatever is happening in the world. It was coming together of many things and not just one particular story.''

On the other hand, Manoj Bajyapee, who is starring in the film said, "We (Kanu and he ) have been talking and wanting to collaborate for a long time after I watched Titli, and I was also looking to break away from all my aspirational goals and ambitions. It all started happening pre Gangs of Wasseypur, where I realized nobody is going to give me what I want. I have to look for it, and in that search Titli happened. In one of the parties I met Kanu, and told him, "think of a script where I can work with you". He offered me a role in Agra. But I said, "No, this is not what I am looking for". Then he came up with this one and this is how it started rolling.''

He added, "But what I realized in the process, was that as an actor if you really want to do something beyond your ambitions, beyond your goals and aspirations, then you have to look for people who can make it happen, and many of the directors succeeded in doing that with me.''

Speaking about Kanu Behl's way of working, Manoj said, ``But here was a director who was tedious, difficult, and demanding. Kanu Behl is not someone you can digest too easily. He makes you cry, makes you angry, he makes you feel tired and exhausted. But something new comes out of it, and I could realise that, and somewhere in the middle of it, I completely surrendered to him. Do whatever you want, you want me to go naked I will go naked, but just wrap it up.''
