Ward 38 residents rue bad roads & irregular garbage collection

Send Push

Guwahati: Citizens living in Ward 38, which includes areas of Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, and portions of Tarun Nagar, have pointed out key issues such as bad roads, problematic street lamps, and irregular garbage collection. These ongoing problems have started to frustrate the residents.

With a population of more than 5,000, the ward is an important thoroughfare, connecting Bhangagarh to Zoo Road areas in the city. However, travelling through the roads is a major issue due to their poor condition. Sasanka Jyoti Deka, the ward councillor, said the roads were damaged during the installation of water pipes for JICA’s project, managed by the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB). Many roads are riddled with potholes, and in some areas, the agency has carelessly filled them.

Deka said some roads in his ward have been identified for repair, and work had begun before the Puja started. He also said more roads, such as LKRB Road, Rupali Path, and Bishnu Path, have been identified for repair work.

Locals have highlighted that the door-to-door garbage collection process is irregular, leading to a rise in mosquito infestations.

The councillor explained that there has been a hiccup as an NGO filed a petition against the GMC in the Guwahati high court regarding the recent door-to-door garbage collection, challenging the decision to award a contract to a less experienced NGO. “This is a temporary issue, and we are trying to solve it,” the councillor said.

The area, dotted with residential homes, hostels, and shops, experiences a dense flow of vehicles but lacks functional street lights, causing minor accidents.
