BBC Breakfast turned tense as Jon Kay took a brutal swipe at the Health Secretary in a heated discussion over whether he was plotting a leadership challenge against Keir Starmer.
No 10 sources have said Streeting is planning to take over as leader if Starmer is forced to quit, although Streeting has staunchly denied being part of any plot. The source said: "Unfortunately, there is a pattern of Keir's team briefing against his own people - they did it to Angela, Lisa, Lucy, now it's Wes's turn. A circular firing squad won't help the Government out of the hole we're in."
In a tense debate on BBC, Jon Kay took a scathing dig at the drama unfolding at No.10 as he compared it to an episode of Celebrity Traitors.
He said: "It sounds like people inside Downing Street think you are a potential problem yourself because we've had this extraordinary briefing overnight to the BBC from people close to the Prime Minister who seem to think they're worried about some kind of leadership challenge in the next few weeks, and they name you as a potential threat. Wes Streeting, are you a faithful or are you a traitor?"
Streeting responded: "Someone has definitely been watching too much Celebrity Traitors in Downing Street. I think they should be watching Countryfile instead and calm down a bit. I am a Faithful, what you're seeing from a silly number 10 source overnight is probably the worst attack on the faithful since Joe Marler was banished in the final.
"So I'm treating it with the same level of seriousness that you are this morning. I'm very grateful that you actually spent a substantial amount of time talking about the NHS. That's what people care about, and it is very frustrating when you get this self-defeating nonsense.
Jon erupted: "Yes, but people also care about the way the country is governed, and this is apparently going on at the highest level," as he pointed out the the source would have known Streeting would be doing interviews after the news broke, saying: "They're clearly worried," as he asked if Streeting would ever stand against Starmer.
He bluntly said: "I'm doing that," as Jon pushed him to confirm he wouldn't take on Starmer, to which Streeting confirmed the former, and said: "This silly briefing is like water off a duck's back".
