The Girlfriend has just arrived on Prime Video and the series is based on the novel of the same name by Michelle Frances.
The raunchy psychological thriller is told through two perspectives - that of successful wife and mother Laura (played by Robin Wright) and her son's new girlfriend, Cherry Laine (Olivia Cooke).
The intriguing premise follows the two women as they fight for Daniel's (Laurie Davidson) affections, with his mother Laura believing Cherry has something to hide.
Laura admits she is an overprotective mother, but her actions scream something a little more sinister as she appears to have an obsession with her son.
Daniel actor Davidson admitted his character shares "awkward" moments with his mum, and the mother-son dynamic most certainly is the most cringeworthy thing about the series.
Within the show's first few moments, Daniel and Laura are seen in a sauna together, with the mother getting particularly close to her son.
My initial thought was "this is a little intimate and creepy, but let's keep going". Yet the mother and son relationship only seemed to get more intense, with the pair seen hugging in the pool like a couple.
One scene in particular, which I will not spoil, involves Laura wrapping her arms around her son at the most awkward of moments, which left me spitting out my tea.
Actor Davidson explained the more awkward moments between Daniel and Laura: "Those moments are quite awkward!
"While there are bigger, more obvious interactions that might make the audience squirm, it's often the smaller gestures - like a hand resting on a shoulder - that make you question their relationship.

"Laura sees them as completely normal, but once Cherry points out her discomfort to Daniel, even the simplest touches begin to feel suspect."
The gestures, both big and small, are of course deliberate in a bid to encourage the audience to appreciate the closeness between mother and son.
Daniel comes from a privileged background and he is the centre of his mother's world, which only amplifies the stark differences in Cherry's life, having come from a working-class background with an absent father.
While one can appreciate the message being shared, there is no denying those disturbing images will remain etched in my mind for some time.
