As the winter chill arrives and homes become increasingly stuffy, households might wish to contemplate one domestic appliance Martin Lewis has previously praised. Numerous choices are on offer, but budget retailer Lidl is launching one of its own. The store will unveil its fresh Tronic Dehumidifier on Thursday, October 16, priced at £74.99. Lidl's moisture-absorbing device arrives as households seek to economise wherever feasible.
Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis declared last year that dehumidifiers represent a clever alternative for clothes drying whilst maintaining reduced bills - and following the latest energy price cap rise, this guidance proves more relevant than ever. Whilst sharing this counsel during The Martin Lewis Podcast, the broadcaster and financial guru branded tumble dryers as 'demon appliances' when it came to energy expenditure. He proceeded to suggest that operating tumble dryers could cost homeowners as much as £1 hourly during winter months. He explained: "Many dehumidifiers have different wattages-the one I checked out was 200W. Once we know it's 200W and we know that a kilowatt is 1,000W, which is how electricity is typically priced, we know this is a fifth of a kilowatt.
"And you pay roughly 34p per kilowatt per hour. A fifth is 7p, so you're going to pay roughly 7p per hour to run a dehumidifier at 200W, assuming it uses full power the whole time."
Currently, a kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity is priced at an average of 26.35 pence in the UK for households on standard variable tariffs, according to the Ofgem Energy Price Cap for the period from October 1 to December 31, 2025. This cost may vary depending on the region and supplier, and it is separate from the daily standing charge, reports the Mirror.
Lidl's website states that its new Tronic Dehumidifier consumes 245W. An appliance using this amount of power over an hour (based on the new October Price Cap) would cost homeowners approximately 7p in electricity.
The Tronic Dehumidifier will be available in limited quantities, subject to stock availability in each store. It comes with two programmes, one for drying laundry and another for dehumidifying.
The product features a 2.1L tank capacity and a moisture extraction rate of up to 10L. It includes a small built-in window for checking the water level, a warning signal that alerts owners when the water tank is full, and overflow protection.
Customers can check online before heading to their local Lidl to see what's in stock. Also launching on October 16 is a range of indoor and outdoor plants, thermal clothing for men, women, and children, as well as other household items.
In other supermarket news, bargain hunters looking to save a few quid and snap up some major discounts ahead of Christmas may want to check out the remaining toy offers at Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Aldi, and Lidl. Some stores are offering deals of up to 50% off big-name brands, while others feature a collection of toys that are exclusive to their stores.
