Strictly Come Dancing fans were left under the impression that Wynne Evans and Katya Jones couldn't stand each other following their latest performance.

The duo had to issue an apology after a supposed "inside joke" backfired. A clip showing Wynne with his hand on Katya's waist, which she tried to remove only for him to place it there again, spread like wildfire across social media, sparking concern among viewers.

Subsequently, Wynne and Katya came forward with an apology, with Katya clarifying: "I have to make this absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke, yes, was it a bad joke, yes."

Come Monday, Wynne expressed his devastation over the negative reaction to their joke.

He confessed: "I'm absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day. It's not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close and we're really good friends, and on Saturday night we made a stupid joke. It was a stupid joke that went wrong, OK? We thought it was funny. It wasn't funny. It has been totally misinterpreted."

Tonight marked the eagerly anticipated comeback of Strictly stars on the dance floor as they tackled the Quickstep to Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra, amidst intensified scrutiny from last week's scandal. Previously taped appearances left audiences eagerly awaiting their live return, following whisperings that Katya appeared "uncomfortable" a claim she has stoutly refuted.

In tonight's episode, Wynne and Katya graced screens in a pre-dance clip, which viewers deemed cringeworthy. Social media reactions were swift, with one observer commenting: "Wins the award for the most awkward VT #strictly."

Another pointed out: "Wynne definitely lost some of his vibrancy in that VT #strictly."

Criticism continued with remarks like: "Make the VT like you don't hate each other #strictly," and "this vt is far too much, VERY unnatural #strictly." Another added: "WHOLESOME NON CONTROVERSIAL VT INCOMING #scd #strictly."
