The M3 in Hampshire was closed in both directions between J9 near Winchester and J8 near Basingstoke on Saturday evening.
National Highways said the closure was prompted by a "multi-vehicle collision".
The organisation, as well as emergency services, arrived on the scene following the incident.
Diversions were put in place and the organisation warned motorists on this section of the M3 to expect delays.
An incident on the National Highways website around the time of the crash and subsequent road closure reported a driver travelling down the wrong side of the road. It has not been confirmed whether this is what caused the crash.
