Andy Murray has responded after Mirra Andreeva confirmed she was still well and truly part of his fan club. When the Russian star burst onto the scene a couple of years ago in Madrid, aged just 15, it was evident that she was one of the sport's brightest young prospects. But she also went viral for another reason, as she branded the Brit "beautiful" during an interview.
More than two years later, Andreeva is now the No. 5 seed at the US Open and a big title contender after winning two WTA 1000s earlier this season. Her feelings about Murray haven't changed, however, as she declared Murray was "ageing like fine wine."
And the 18-year-old Russian isn't the only one swooning over Murray, as she appeared in a Tennis Channel video alongside Alja Tomljanovic, who confirmed she had also been "crushing" on the former world No. 1.
"So you and I have the same crush when we were teenagers. You called someone, 'he's even more beautiful than person'," the Australian tennis star said.
"Andy was my crush when I was like 13, 14. And when you said that, I was like, 'Mirra gets it, Mirra understands'. What was your interaction like after you professed your love for him?"
Reflecting on her infamous 2023 interview, Andreeva replied: "I did it on camera and I would never think he would even listen to one of those interviews and I would never think that this would go viral, because I was like, well, I might just say what I think.
"And I said it and then it went viral and then I tried to kind of keep my distance and when I saw him, I would just go the other way, wait 10 minutes to see if he left, and then I would go, because I was so shy that everyone heard it and that everyone kind of got a little bit obsessed by this."
But the world No. 5 now stands by her comments, and she doubled down while chatting to Tomljanovic. "But I feel like he's ageing like fine wine, you know? I look at him now and I'm like, 'Oh yeah, he looks super, super great'. And how he's playing golf," she added, before the Aussie cut her off.
"Okay, you're keeping up with his life. You know what he's up to," Tomljanovic joked, before Andreeva suggested she "dug myself another hole."
While Andreeva and Tomljanovic are in agreement over their harmless crush, the object of their affection doesn't quite agree. The latest video caught Murray's attention, and he had a hilarious reply.
"I've agreed to cover the cost for both ladies to have a check up at their local optometrist post @usopen," he wrote in the comments.
