Infantry Day 2024: Remembering the Heroes Who Defended Our Nation

Send Push

Every year, October 27 is observed as Infantry Day in India, a day dedicated to honoring the contributions of the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army. This significant occasion allows the nation to pay tribute to the courageous soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the integrity of the country.

The historical importance of this day dates back to October 27, 1947, when the first Indian Army troops landed at Srinagar airport. This decisive action marked a crucial turning point as these brave soldiers confronted the tribal invaders, who were backed by Pakistan, forcing them to retreat.

The events leading up to this day began on October 26, 1947, when Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir signed the instrument of accession, integrating the princely state into the Indian Union. Following this pivotal decision, a Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was dispatched to Srinagar to defend against the tribal raiders, who had already infiltrated the region under the guise of local volunteers from the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). Their objective was clear: to forcibly seize Jammu and Kashmir and annex it to Pakistan.

In the face of this aggression, the Indian troops were urgently called upon to reinforce the state forces after the Maharaja's signing of the instrument of accession. The first battalion deployed, commanded by Lt. Col. Dewan Ranjit Rai, quickly secured the Srinagar airfield, providing a crucial foothold for further operations. From there, the soldiers moved swiftly to Baramulla, aiming to halt the advancing invaders.

Despite their valiant efforts, the situation was perilous. Lt. Col. Dewan Ranjit Rai and his men faced fierce resistance, but they managed to delay the enemy's advances toward Srinagar, showcasing unparalleled bravery and determination. Tragically, during this critical engagement near Baramulla, Lt. Col. Rai was martyred, leaving behind a legacy of heroism that continues to inspire generations.

Infantry Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who have defended India's sovereignty and territorial integrity. As the nation reflects on this day, it stands united in honoring these heroes, recognizing their unwavering commitment and valor in the face of adversity.
