Trends come and go, so investing in something simply because it's fashionable is a risk. Instead, opt for classic colourways that will stand the test of time, regardless of the season.
"It's easier in fashion to simply add a piece of leopard print or switch up your denim. But when it comes to your home, you can't just throw things away. You have to learn what your style is and what suits you, and stick to it," advises Kelly.
Tiny transformationsUpdating your home with smaller pieces, such as new tableware and linen, is a budget-friendly way to transform your space, whilst also allowing your personal style to shine.
"When we come out of winter and go into spring, we shed a few layers. Your home is the same – now is a good time to move things around and add new pieces," says Kelly.
Spring and flowers go hand in hand, so fresh blooms, such as tulips in a chic vase, are an easy way to reinvigorate a room. "Yesterday, I filled a Perspex trough with hyacinth bulbs and I put it on the kitchen table – it felt very spring-like.
"It's little things like that, for instance using different flowers in a new season," Kelly explains. "The expression 'spring clean' is a real thing. You go through the transition and you feel different."
A different perspectiveYou needn't spend a fortune if you work with what you've got. So it's important to first take stock of what's in your home before you begin searching for new pieces. "I've always said people should take everything off counters and shelves and move things around to give them a new lease of life," explains Kelly. "Then you can add pieces to that."
When creating spaces that reflect the looks you love, take your time – pick out an interior you're attracted to, imagine yourself in that space and try to work out what it is about the decor that draws you in. It could be a colour, it could be the shape of a sofa, it could be a light.
"A lot of people make big decisions very quickly, and they're the wrong decisions. When you go shopping for clothes, you can try them on. You can’t really try on homes," says Kelly.
