A has died during a race in . The 40-year-old was one of the participants in the Mallorca 312 event, a famous amateur road race which runs around the island and finishes in Playa de Muro.
The tragedy occurred this morning. The victim is said to have fallen off his bike and gone into , on the road between Esporles and Valldemossa. Medical responders tried to revive him and he was taken by ambulance to the island capital Palma. He died before arriving at the Rotger Clinic where he was being transferred to.

An investigation into the incident, led by the Civil Guard, has been launched. Event organisers said in a statement: “We want to transfer our most sincere condolences to the man's family and loved ones.”

An Irish cyclist died on the island earlier this month. The 59-year-old is said to have come off his bike after “collapsing” on a road in Pollensa in the north of the holiday island.
He was on the Ma-2210 road linking the popular Port de Pollensa resort to the Formentor Lighthouse. The alarm was raised just after 4pm on April 9. Paramedics tried to revive him after reaching the scene but there was nothing they could do to save him.
Scots tourist Graeme McGilvray, 49, from Glasgow, died in March 2016 on a roundabout on a busy road between Alcudia and Port Alcudia after being knocked off his bike by a lorry.
In September 2023 a 45-year-old British cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a lorry on the island. He fell more than 30ft down an embankment at the side of the road after being run over.
Emergency responders reported at the time he had suffered “very serious” head, chest and stomach injuries when they attended him at the scene before rushing him to hospital.
That incident happened near Caimiri, a small inland town in Majorca at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains which is famous for its olives.
Today was the 15th edition of the Mallorca 312, full name Mallorca 312 OK Mobility. Around 8,500 cyclists took part, with the first ones leaving the start line at 6.30am local time.
Participants cover one of three distances - the marathon 312 kilometres and shorter ones of 167 and 225 kilometres.
It was not immediately clear which of the distances the British man had signed up to do.
Police have not yet made any official comment. The investigation is expected to look into whether the victim suffered a health problem before falling off the bike. He is understood to have sustained serious injuries in the fall.
Event organisers are expected to pay tribte to him during the medal ceremony.
EX-Chelsea and Real Madrid star Eden Hazard was among this year’s participants in the famous event. He said as he crossed the finishing line: “Very hard and my legs are really hurting but it was very good. The first part was okay but the last 25 kilometres were impossible. I have to train a little more and lose a little bit of weight and then it will be perfect.”
The full statement from the event organisers about the British man’s death said: “Mallorca 312 OK Mobility deeply regrets the death of a participant during the celebration of the event after suffering a fall. We want to offer our most sincere condolences to the rider’s family and loved ones and we have already made ourselves available to offer them all the support they need at these so difficult moments. Rest in peace.”
British cycling enthusiasts expressed their sorrow about the tragedy on social media today. Neil Sibley wrote: “Such sad and horrible news on what should be such an enjoyable day.”
David Wilkins added: “Very sad news. RIP. As someone who had completed it for the last two years, this news is close to my heart.”
A Brazilian participant in the event, Rodrigo Carrera, said: “I passed when they were doing CPR. Really sad. Condolences to family and friends.”
Paul Renton added: “So sad. Thoughts and prayers go to the family.”
