If you consume fermented foods daily, then what can be its benefits and disadvantages. Let's know about it from the experts
What do the experts say?
Priya Paliwal, Chief Dietician at Shri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi, says that eating fermented foods (such as curd, pickles, idli, dhokla, kanji, sauerkraut, etc.) daily can be beneficial for health, but it should be eaten in limited quantities. Fermented foods contain good bacteria i.e. probiotics, which are beneficial for the intestines and strengthen the digestive system. This can provide relief from problems like constipation, gas and indigestion. Apart from this, these foods improve the immune system and increase the absorption of nutrients in the body. Many researches also show that fermented foods help in improving mood because there is a deep connection between the intestine and the brain.
However, some people may also be harmed by this, especially those who have gastric ulcers and acidity problems or are allergic to milk. Eating too much fermented or sour food can increase the problem of acidity and bloating. Therefore, it is important to eat them fresh and in the right quantity. Packaged fermented foods available in the market may contain high amounts of preservatives and salt, which is not good for health. Therefore, it would be best to prepare them at home and eat them. If your health is normal, then including fermented foods once or twice a day can be beneficial. But if there is any specific disease, then definitely consult a doctor first.
