The Significance of Gopashtami
Gopashtami is mentioned in the Padma Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, according to which, Lord Krishna first took up the task of grazing cows on the eighth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartik. This festival is primarily celebrated in Mathura, Vrindavan, and Braj, where cows and calves are primarily worshipped. It is believed that they are very dear to Lord Krishna.
In Braj, cows are bathed and decorated on this day. On Gopashtami, money is donated to a cowshed for the care of cows, and they are fed jaggery and fodder, expressing respect and gratitude.
