The Legend of Bhai Dooj
Bhai Dooj is associated with Yamraj and his sister Yamuna. According to mythology, one day, Yamraj visited his sister Yamuna at her home. Yamuna happily welcomed him, applied a tilak to him, and served him delicious food. Pleased with her sister's affection and hospitality, Yamraj asked for a boon. Yamuna granted that any sister who applied a tilak to their brothers and fed them on this day would never face the fear of untimely death. Yamaraj granted this boon. Since then, this festival has been celebrated every year on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya (the second day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Kartika) as "Bhai Dooj."
Recite this mantra while applying a tilak to your brother:
"Ganga worships Yamuna, Yamuna worships Yamaraj. Subhadra worships Krishna. May the waters of Ganga and Yamuna flow, my brother, may you grow and prosper."

The Significance of Bhai Dooj
The festival of Bhai Dooj is a symbol of the deep affection between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters bathe in the morning, perform puja, listen to the story, and apply tilak to their brothers, praying for their long life and happiness and prosperity.
