In a recent update, Germany’s tourism sector is experiencing impressive growth, thanks to Indian travellers. The country has witnessed a remarkable surge in visitors from India, with air connectivity between India and Germany playing an important role in this expansion.
As per reports, direct flights have risen by 28% from January 2019 to January 2025, with the number of monthly flights climbing from 241 to 309. This enhanced air connectivity is making travel between the two countries more accessible, boosting Germany’s appeal to Indian tourists seeking smoother, more convenient travel experiences.
In a recent press conference hosted by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) and the German Embassy in India, Germany was promoted as the ideal destination for Indian travellers. The event introduced exclusive travel packages designed for various interests, including romantic getaways, nature-based adventures, and sustainable travel options. Acknowledging the growing demand from Indian tourists, the GNTB unveiled these specially curated packages to cater to their preferences.
The tourism boom is also reflected in the numbers. In 2024, Indian visitors to Germany increased by 8.6%, with 71,138 more Indian tourists staying in the country compared to the previous year. The total number of overnight stays by Indian travelers reached 897,841 in 2024. Furthermore, the average length of stay for Indian visitors rose to 9.6 nights, up from 9.3 nights in 2023, indicating a deeper engagement with the destination.
This growth is further highlighted by a Skift India report showing that Indian travelers' spending grew four times faster than the global average. With the introduction of tailored tourism packages, Germany is positioning itself as a prime destination for honeymooners and cultural explorers alike, offering a mix of romance and historical charm.
Romit Theophilus, Director of Marketing & Sales at the GNTO, noted that Germany’s appeal lies in its unique offerings for Indian tourists: “Germany ignites Indian wanderlust with romantic escapes and cultural explorations, catering to modern travelers. Whether it’s a couple seeking a peaceful retreat or adventurers exploring historic routes, Germany offers something special. Our focus on sustainability and cultural depth will particularly resonate with Indian travelers, especially those looking for romantic getaways.”
In addition to leisure tourism, Germany’s popularity is also boosted by the presence of around 50,000 Indian students. The influx of family and friends visiting students further supports tourism growth. Germany is also working to streamline the Schengen visa process , making travel easier for Indian tourists.
Enzweiler, a spokesperson, emphasized the ongoing efforts to digitize the visa process, which will eventually make obtaining visas more efficient. Although changes are gradual, the digitalization of visa procedures, which began with national visas, will extend to Schengen visas in the future, simplifying travel for Indian visitors.
