Deepak Mahto arrived in Mumbai 15 years ago with a single goal: to become an actor. Like thousands who come to the city with stars in their eyes, his path was not smooth. To make ends meet, Deepak took up several jobs—marble cutting, labour contracting, housekeeping, and storekeeping—before finding his voice and audience online.
From Marble Cutter to Housekeeper
His recent Labour Day post on Instagram went viral for all the right reasons. In a photo series shared on May 1, Deepak documented his work history from 2016 to 2024—starting with marble cutting at Pune’s Jupiter Hospital, then working at Lalbaug’s Ashok Tower in 2017, and later taking up labour contracting work at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium in 2019.
However, just when his earnings started stabilising, the pandemic struck. Deepak had submitted his contractor bills shortly before the nationwide lockdown and lost almost five years of savings. He couldn't return to Mumbai for two years and never recovered the money.
During this period, he took up housekeeping roles at construction sites to stay financially afloat.
Slowly, a Following Grows
By 2023, Deepak was employed as a carpenter supervisor at Marine Drive’s Express Tower. In 2024, he worked as a storekeeper at a construction project in BKC for Godrej Pvt Ltd. But it was around this time that his Instagram page began to gain traction.
Posting videos that blended his acting skills and day-to-day life, Deepak connected with viewers through simplicity and consistency. His content, often featuring lip-syncs to Bollywood songs and dialogues, struck a chord with users looking for real stories and relatable faces.
Today, his account has 1.4 million followers.
From Instagram Reels to Screen Roles
Deepak’s rising digital popularity led to opportunities in film and television. He has appeared in Scam 2003 (directed by Hansal Mehta), Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo (by Homi Adajania), and has a role in the upcoming movie Sri (directed by Tushar Hiranandani). He has also acted in multiple TV serials and ad campaigns.
He is currently the brand ambassador for a digital platform called Polipost.
A Story That Resonates
While not everyone who comes to Mumbai achieves stardom, Deepak Mahto’s story stands out for his persistence, adaptability, and ability to evolve. From carrying fertiliser in his village to becoming a digital content creator and actor, he has built a career by navigating opportunities wherever they arose.
His journey—shared in his own words and pictures—serves as a reminder that the road to success may not be linear, but it can still lead to meaningful outcomes.
