BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut faced angry protests during her visit to Patlikuhal in Manali’s Kullu district on Thursday. Locals, upset over her delayed visit to rain-affected areas, raised black flags and shouted slogans like “Go back Kangana, you are late,” as her convoy passed. Videos of the protest have since gone viral.
Tensions rose when BJP workers accompanying her tried to pacify the crowd, leading to heated exchanges before police intervened to restore calm.
Speaking to residents, Kangana said she too had suffered losses from the disaster. “My restaurant here made only ₹50 in business, but I still have to pay ₹15 lakh in salaries. Please understand my pain. I am also human, a single woman,” she said, asking locals not to target her personally.
She reminded them that she lives and runs businesses in Manali, adding, “Don’t attack me as if I am the Queen of England doing nothing for you. I too earn my living here. My house and land are here, and I have also suffered losses.”
The protests were triggered by accusations that Kangana had been ignoring her constituency in the aftermath of the monsoon calamity, which devastated Himachal Pradesh. Over 424 people have died since June 20, with major damage to roads, bridges, hotels, and homes.
Kangana earlier visited Solang and Palchan, meeting affected families and reviewing the damage with former Manali MLA Govind Singh Thakur, who briefed her about the need to divert the Beas river to prevent further erosion threatening entire villages.

This is not the first time the Mandi MP has faced backlash. In July, she drew criticism for not visiting immediately after flash floods claimed lives in Nachan constituency. She had then clarified that MPs have limited powers in disaster relief but promised to help get central funds released.
Kangana owns a luxury cottage in Manali and has been vocal about her connection to the region.
Heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods at several places in Kullu and Manali on August 25 and August 26, with strong currents of the Beas river washing away a multi-storey hotel and four shops.
Stretches of Chandigarh-Manali National Highway and Manali-Leh Highway were washed away due to the rising water level of Beas River. Right Bank Road of Manali connecting Kullu city, bus stand and Bindu Dhank also suffered extensive damage.
A house was damaged in Ramshele area in Kullu, water entered houses in the 14 Mile area near Manali and a fish farm was damaged in Patlikuhal as rivers and drains were in spate.
