Mumbai: Chief Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud said on Saturday that he sat before God (in his home) and asked him to find a solution to the vexed Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid dispute when the case came up before a bench led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi in which Chandrachud was one of the justices.

The other members of the bench were Justices S A Bobde, Ashok Bhushan and SA Nazeer.

Speaking in an event where he was felicitated by villagers of his native village Kanesar in Pune, Chandrachud said, “I became the Chief justice.. Many times it happens that we get cases and what is the way out of it, we don’t get a solution. In Ayodhya (Ramjanmabhoomi- Babri Masjid case) when it came before me, for three months, we were thinking about the Ayodhya case, meaning for hundreds of years for which there was no solution. At that time in my regular life, I have been worshipping God in my home and at that time I sat before God and I told him that he should find a solution for this and you will believe this if you have faith then God will always find a way for us”said Chandrachud who is set to retire on November 10.

The Ram janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute that was pending since 1822 finally ended when the Supreme Court ordered on 9 th November that the 2.77 acres will be handed over to a trust to build the Ram Temple.

The court also ordered the government to give an alternative 5 acres of land in another place to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board for building another mosque to replace the Babri Masjid that was demolished in 1992.

Chandrachud was in the news recently after he invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Ganesh Pooja in his home. The invite and the Prime Minister’s visit to the PM’s home was criticized by the opposition parties in the country.

With the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena faction asking Chief Justice Chandrachud to recuse himself from hearing the case involving the Shiv Sena split that is being heard before his bench.

During the event Chandrachud also spoke about how his decision on women officer’s permanent commission had empowered women.

“Today our women in the army are deployed between the border between India- Pakistan and China. Similarly in the Air force we have female fighter pilots even in the Navy, our women have worked in submarines and warships.. The country is changing and there are a lot of opportunities that we should accept”said Chandrachud.
