China has issued a direct warning to countries considering trade deals with the United States that could disadvantage Beijing. The statement came on Monday after reports that Washington, under Donald Trump’s leadership, may offer tariff exemptions to other nations in return for limiting their trade with China.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said it “respects all parties to resolve their economic and trade differences with the United States through consultations on an equal footing,” but made it clear it would not stay silent if such deals came at its cost.
“Will never accept it”
“China firmly opposes any party striking a deal at the expense of China,” the ministry said, adding that if any such arrangement were pursued, “China will never accept it and will take countermeasures in a resolute and reciprocal manner.”
The response follows speculation around Trump’s efforts to reshape global trade relationships by offering incentives to countries that reduce commercial links with China—a tactic Beijing views as a form of economic coercion.
Beijing also criticised governments that may be tempted to bend to US demands. “Appeasement will not bring peace, and compromise will not be respected,” said a spokesperson for China’s Commerce Ministry, calling out what it sees as an unwise submission to Washington’s pressure.
China “believes that all parties should stand on the side of fairness and justice on the issue of reciprocal tariffs,” and signalled it expects trading partners to uphold those values.
In a more conciliatory note directed towards its global partners, the ministry said it was “willing to strengthen solidarity and coordination with all parties, join hands to deal with the situation, [and] jointly resist unilateral bullying.”
The call reflects China’s intent to counterbalance American influence by strengthening cooperation with like-minded economies. The message is also a sign that Beijing is actively seeking to build a coalition of countries that oppose Washington’s aggressive tariff policies.
The Commerce Ministry concluded with a clear warning. “China is determined and capable of safeguarding its own rights and interests.”
The statement signals that China is not only ready to retaliate economically but also to shape a broader diplomatic response to what it sees as unfair trade practices. As tensions mount, Beijing appears committed to defending its market position—even if that means taking on multiple fronts at once.
