World Pet Day 2025: Essential tips for first-time pet parents

So, you’ve finally done it—you brought home a furry (or scaly, or feathery) little companion, and your heart’s already melting. Welcome to the wild, adorable world of pet parenting.

 It’s equal parts joy, chaos, and unconditional love. But let’s be real—it’s also a learning curve. Since today is World Pet Day 2025, there’s no better time to slow down and check in with yourself. Here are five things to keep in mind as you navigate this new chapter:

Patience is the key

Whether you have a high-energy puppy who thinks your sneakers are a chew toy or a cat who hasn't yet decided if it likes you, remember that they are adjusting as well. Pets – like humans – take time to adjust to new environments and routines. 

It requires a lot of consistency (and phasing out the yelling on the inside when you see a new ‘claw art’ on your couch because you're using a calm demeanor to redirect the behavior.

Food is not a one-size-fits-all

While you may be tempted to get whatever is the cheapest or give them all the scraps off your plate (those eyes!) food is a serious topic. All animals have specialized nutrition, and what your friend's dog eats will not be the same thing your dog can eat. A quick phone call to the vet to ask for recommendations will save you a lot of trouble - and guessing - and rash actions that will ultimately result in a mess for everyone.

Your pet is not just an accessory; they are a commitment. That little kitten will not stay small forever, and that cute little bunny has plenty of jumping left in them. Think down the road: vet visits, daily care, mental stimulation, and yes, even a little bit of cleanup!

Training takes time (and treats)

No one expects your pet to be perfect on day one; not even your pet. Training takes consistency, some rewards, and a little imagination. It's perfectly fine to celebrate the small wins and not be discouraged if things fall apart. Whether potty training or basic commands, you're building your bond.

Learn your pet’s personality

As much as you love them, you should also learn them. Every pet is unique in its personality, individualism, and boundaries. Some pets are cuddly, and others are just bizarre (in an adorable way). You can take the time to observe and really learn about them from a distance, and create a trusting bond, which is really special and worth all the hard work.
