Recently, Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police cracked down on one such alarming case.

What is a Shaadi Scam?

In a typical Shaadi Scam, fraudsters create fake profiles on matrimonial websites like Shaadi.com and Jeevansathi.com. They portray themselves as well-settled professionals, often from respected families, and lure people into trusting them with the promise of marriage.

In a recent case from Hyderabad, a scammer named J. Vamshi Krishna created a false identity to target a female doctor. Gaining her trust, he claimed urgent financial needs and eventually duped her out of ₹11 lakh. To make matters worse, once he received the money, he began blackmailing her by threatening to misuse her personal information and photos.

How Do These Scammers Operate?

These criminals often opt for “premium” services on matrimonial sites, which are marketed as offering “verified profiles.” However, investigations revealed that many platforms fail to thoroughly verify documents, making it easier for scammers to target genuine users.

In the Hyderabad incident, Shaadi.com was found to have promoted Krishna’s fake profile without proper background checks. Shockingly, the same scammer had reportedly defrauded more than 20 individuals across various states.

How to Protect Yourself from Matrimonial Scams

• Verify Profiles Thoroughly: Always cross-check personal details like Aadhaar cards, job verification, and family backgrounds before proceeding with any relationship.

• Beware of Financial Requests: If anyone asks for money before marriage — even citing emergencies — consider it a major red flag.

• Report Suspicious Activity Immediately: If you suspect any foul play, reach out to your nearest cyber crime cell without delay.
